Fashawn - Talks Nas,
This new school rapper is talking about how he was influenced by nas's first album, "illmatic" which he listened to in 2001. The album was released in 1994, but he said he said he got it because nas rapped in "got yourself a gun", the first single off "stillmatic", where he said "hit the record store, get my whole collection"; and that is exactly what this young man did.

GAME'S BUZZ
GAME's album, R.E.D is dropping very soon, and he is trying to get all the buzz he can before then. I think he is doing real hard work on that. He shot the video to a song, "shake" that is confirmed not to be a single on his upcoming album. He also just released the video for 400bars, a song on his new mixtape, RED ROOM; and he also went ahead to shoot the video for the song he did with pharrell for his mixtape, "it must be me". Wow! So much hard work, i do hope it translates to success.
I like the strategy he is using, trying to be everywhere, on every radio station and music t.v station, so that people get used to his name once again. I must say that he also recently dropped his official first single, "ain't no doubt about it", featuring JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE. People are having mixed feelings about this song; some say they don't like it at all, that game came off soft on the pharrell beat, some say it is game trying some experimenting, and that they like it; what i have to say is that the song would have to take time to grow on people because they are not used to hearing game on soft beats, but i must say you can't take away the fact that game's verses on the song were really hot and on point, so with that alone, i give the song a chance.

NAS AND KELIS RELEASING ALBUMS A DAY APART.
Surprisingly, veteran rapper, NAS and his ex-wife, are dropping albums a day apart in MAY. KELIS, who has not dropped an album since her 2006 album, Kelis Was Here [Explicit], is dropping her 5th album "flesh tone" on may 17, a day before nas drops his collaborative album with DAMIAN MARLEY, "distant relatives.
Watch out for that nas and damian marley album, and go out and get it when it drops on may 18th; support HIPHOP. I have heard three tracks from it, the first single (as we enter), and two other dope tracks, and i think it would be an enlightening album, as well as a fine blend of rap and reggae.
I have to say that i saw the video to kelis's new single, "acapella", and it really beat me up to think that she and nas are seperated; they were so good together, and she is looking really fine in that video. Anyway, i feel that is what it is, and i wish them luck with handling the kid they have together.

GAME' R.E.D ROOM MIXTAPE.
West coast rapper, GAME, dropped his latest mixtape today, R.E.D ROOM. If you would ask me, it is more or less like an album. It has all types of super weight guest appearances; from jim jones, to diddy, jada kiss, to fabolous, and a host of others. The mixtapes starts with his much talked about 20 minutes rap song; 400 bars, which is a follow up to his 2005 track, 300 bars and gunning.
This is just a warm up for his fans till his album drops on june 15, and i think his fans would not be dissapointed. I have not heard the whole mixtape, but the 3-4 tracks i have heard tell all of what someone is to expect.

NIGERIAN RAPPER, DA GRIN, DEAD
Wow! I just took a nap a couple of hours ago, and i wake up to the news that young iconic NIGERIAN RAPPER, DA GRIN just passed away. Da GRIN IS DEAD! It is really hard for me to believe. I never really get emotional like this, but it is just unbelievable that someone with sooo much energy for the world would just pass like that.
He was in a car wreck and was confirmed dead yesterday, april 22, 2010,at 7 in the evening. His passing just makes me feel like any of us can die at anytime. I think he would be greatly missed in the Nigerian music scene, and my love goes out to his family and close friends.
He was like a breath of fresh air; the perfect blend of lyricism, and wit. His infusion of the local yoruba dialect and English in his raps couldn't have been better; it was brilliant. Wow! I am still overwhelmed. And a lot of people wouldn't know how much they miss him till some time pass and you are wondering, "is he really gone for real?" It is just so sad.
It is just so sad that he had so much more to give to Nigerians, and the world at large; this is kinda like how tupac was when he died. I ain't saying their music was the same, but the energy they brought with it, and the fans they seemed to gather.

A LOOK AT THE RAP ALBUMS ON THE BILLBOARD CHARTS
Another week has run through, so fast if you would ask me. Anyway, it is that time of the week when i give you the stats of how rap albums are doing on the billboard chart.
Ludacris's "battle of the sexes album is still the most relevant rap album on the charts for now; 25,000 copies this week, bringing the total to 335,000 copies sold so far. I am still yet to have a feel of the album, i would probably cop it this weekend; must definitely.
Gucci mane's mixtape, "burrprint 2" sold 19,000 copies in it's first week in stores. Nice numbers, concidering the fact that it is a mixtape.
All the other rap albums are not doing to good with the numbers; the trio of GHOST FACE KILLA, METHODMAN AND RAEKWON sold 6,600 copies this week, of their joint effort, WU MASSACRE, bringing the total to 56k.
E-40'S revenue retrieving: day shift sold 3,700 copies this week, bringing the total to 21k. Snoop doggs "more malice" cd sold 3,400 copies this week, bringing the total to 34k.
That is it for this week, see you next week.

FAT JOE'S MOVE TO E 1 RECORDS.
I have always been a fan of FAT JOE'S music, i can't say i have followed him from his first album, REPRESENT (1993), but since my cousin, demola somorin, gave me his loyalty album in 2002, i have been a fan, and have never been dissapointed.
It just surprises me when people keep saying the dude is wack, or too commercial, or this and that. Well, everybody has a right to an opinion, and that is just how the way life works, but sometimes i just feel that the large proportion of the people that are saying all these things have never listened to his albums, but just judge from what the media is saying, or what 50 cent is saying, or what their best friends told them; it should not be so.
Anyway, back to the story at hand; fat joe just made a move to E1 records, which was formerly koch, and he is going to be dropping his latest album, "dark side", which is his 10th album. He had gone independent after being dropped by atlantic records, sometime between 2004-2005. But i think his move to E1 records would make it better for him.
I have always seen fat joe as rapper that loves the art and wants to stay relevant, but not go too much with thie swing; he may release some commercial singles, but you need to listen to his albums to know what the man is made of.
BELOW IS WHAT FAT JOE HAD TO SAY ABOUT HIS MOVE TO E1 RECORDS:
"I moved everything to E1, I started out with Alan Grunblatt," Joe explained to DJ Envy, "and with all the success we had with DJ Khaled, all his albums, I feel real good about their marketing and promoting team and we're just going in...I put up my own money for my projects so in the back end I can see the most...I'm into owning my own masters, that's the only thing I really, really care about is just owning my own stuff so 20 years from now my kids can eat off of that. That's what's important to me..." (Sucker Free)

WHY ARE ALL THIS NEW WEST COAST RAPPERS SOUNDING LIKE GAME.
I wont lie to you, i have not really been listening to a lot of this new rappers, not to talk of the ones from the west. But recently, when there was talks of them beefing with ICE CUBE or something like that, i decided to do some background check on them. And even before i could go far, i saw the video for one GLASSES MALONE single,Sun Come Up , which features BIRDMAN, RICK ROSS and T-PAIN, and i was like why is this dude rapping like GAME? I swear, the guy is trying to imitate that same raspy voice game uses. I have to admit that it sounds good and the dude is aight though.
Then, i did some youtube searches on JAY ROCK, and i listened to a couple of his songs, and i am like this guy is completly jacking game's style. His voice, his gangstar image, even the proclamation of blood affiliation; men, i don't know, this is just my opinion.
I think it is only nipsey hustle that i think kind of has his own style, and no wonder he was the first one i noticed. I just think it is not looking good for the WESTCOAST if all its new artist sound alike.
Then to top it up, i saw on twitter yesterday that jay rock felt game directed some lines his way on 400 bars, and that he was ready for beef/war if that was what game wanted. Wow! Is that seeking publicity or what? As i said, this are just my thoughts; just my opinion.

RAP ALBUMS ON THE BILLBOARD CHART
It is the end of another week of sales on the billboard chart: if you didn't know, the sales week starts on tuesday and ends on tuesday. That means soundscan counts from tuesday to tuesday and gives out the full week sales on wednesdays, and i get on that day or the next.
Anyway, this week on the charts, LUDACRIS is still the only rapper moving major units (although the units are not so major), and this week, his latest effort, BATTLE OF THE SEXES moves 26,000 copies, bringing the over all total to 310,000 copies so far. It is on it's way to selling 500k.
The trio of METHOD MAN, GHOSTFACE KILLA AND RAEKWON of the veteran rap group, WU TAN CLAN dropped a collaborative album a couple of weeks ago, and is another notable rap album on the charts. Although it is not moving massive units, it is still looking good for the declining sales in rap albums of recent. The album sold 11k this week, bringing the total to 49k
50 cents fouth album, BEFORE I SELF DESTRUCT has crawled back on the charts and has managed to sell 2,400 copies this week, bringing the total to 436k. I hope he makes it to 500k.
President of Def Jam South, and TERROR SQUAD member, DJ KHALEED has his compilation album on the charts this week. Although i feel the album is not doing as good as someone of his recent caliber should be doing, it is worth the mention. The album which is titled VICTORY, sold 2,400copies this week, bringing the total sales to 52k
That is all for this week, till i come your way again next week.

J.COLE TURNS DOWN DRAKE'S NAS COMPARISON: GUESS HE WOULD RATHER BE COMPARED WITH JAY-Z
A couple of days, DRAKE compared J.COLE (member of JAY-Z's ROC NATION imprint) to nas, and i guess cole has other plans. He started off his response (in a recent interview) giving props to nas, saying it was too early to be compared to the rap veteran, but that wasn't the only reason he declined the comparison.
"Comparisons are natural," Cole said in an interview. "But in this particular instance, and no disrespect to [Drake's] opinion, because that's how he feels, but I feel like it's too early. You can't call things like that, that early. You can't say I'm Nas because, look, Nas was in the game for 16 years. What if I'm not here next year? What if you're not here next year? I don't think you can say stuff like that this early, but I understand what people are saying. At his status right now, he's the most talked-about guy in the game. The Nas comparison is like, 'He gets a little bit beyond the surface,' but I feel like when it comes to those comparisons, it's way to early. And you never know, 10 years from now, I could be Jay." (MTV)
Well, from reading that, you can deduce that he would rather be compared to jay than nas; just like many other new acts on the scene. Although they acknowledge nas's skills and creativity on the mic, they would rather be associated with jay's financial status.
Below is drake's initial comment on j.cole...
"I'm at the starting line," Drake said in an interview. "Those guys are at home, putting on their tracksuits, getting ready to make their attack. When J. Cole gets it super-right, I think he's gonna have a place as a Nas-type character who really stands for hip-hop, but still makes ill records that everybody f*cks with." (Complex)
Well, all said and done, it is just cool that the two of them would pay homage to the real legends of hip hop.

A LOOK AT THE BILLBOARD CHARTS
This week has two rap debuts from veteran rappers: You have the dynamic collaboration from REAKWON, METHOD MAN AND GHOST FACE KILLER with there album, Wu Massacre, and you have a new album from E-40, Revenue Retrievin: Day Shift. and Revenue Retrievin: Night Shift , a double cd. The two debuts sold, 39,000 and 12,000 copies respectively. I think i wasn't expecting more, because of the climate of the industry right now, towards core rap releases.
Else where on the charts, you have LUDACRIS'S battle of the sexes album doing luke warm numbers, 40k this week, to bring the total, after 3 weeks to 284k.
Those are all the notable rap releases for this week...if i didn't mention any new release you know about, it is probably because it is not in my radar, probably selling below 1k.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT JAE MILLZ OF THE YOUNG MONEY CREW.
Yes, what do you think about jae millz of the young money crew? I knew the guy for a couple of years before he joined YOUNG MONEY, and i always knew he was good. He just had a couple of label problems. I can remember back in 2005 or so when i first saw him in a DVD; i can't remember who compiled the dvd, but there was a part, about 20 minutes ling where he was having a freestyle battle with another rapper; and damn! did he murder the guy or what...Puff was also in the dvd, right behind the guy.
After that, i followed him for a while; his underground tracks and underground feauturings. I was happy when i heard he finally got a deal with Young Money. I wish him all the best.
Below is what he had to say in a recent interview.
“The whole set up was just right with Young Money becoming a powerhouse. [Lil] Wayne had just sold a million records in the first week [with Tha Carter III] and he had been screaming 'Young Money' all along. He had been shouting it out for the longest so when the label actually came it was when he was at the height of his career. It kind of just made sense and all of the artists just came together. I mean you already knew who I was and you already knew who Gudda Gudda and Mack Maine and when you add Drake and Tyga, we are unstoppable."

YOUNG JEEZY FEELS LIKE HE IS RUNNING THE RAP GAME.
YOUNG JEEZY is on some high right now, and he feels like he is running the rap game; well, that is his own opinion, not every one else'. I just read an interview on some hiphop site where he is talking about how much he has done in the rap game, and that he is four albums in, and that BIGGIE only had 2 albums, and he said that made him ahead of the game. Well, as i said before, that is his own thoughts, and not what every body feels.
I don't hate the dude, and i don't fancy him either. I know he an okay rapper, and has some fans, i think he should just respect that and stay in his lane. But i guess, it is the rap game and you have to do a little bragging every now and then, you got to blow your trumpert in rap, or else, it would be like everybody has forgotten you.
He has an album dropping soon, MOTIVATION 103, so i understand why he is hungry for some publicity; it is good for the game anyway. YOUNG JEEZY; DO YOU THING!

WHAT DO THINK ABOUT THE RUMOUR ON JAY-Z BEING A FREE MASON.
I had a heated argument with a very close friend of mine on the issue of JAY-Z being a free mason or not, or whether he is in any cult at all.
The agument didn't end well, as my friend was going with jay and i was against. Well, i didn't conclude that he is a free mason, i just said he was on the dark side, and i made my reference to some lyrics in his songs from the past and also present.
Anyway, i dwelled on his latest offensive lyrics from his EMPIRE STATE OF MIND song where, in the third verse, he drops the line "Jesus can't save you, life starts where the church ends". My friend said i was taking it to far and that i took what he said out of contest.
I don't think there can be any explanation for uthering something like that, and i wonder why people are not commenting on this. I read an interview where he said he didn't go to church, he said he didn't believe in religeon; i am not really against an atheist, but whn that person is trying to lead others that are not so strong minded astary, that is when i get sconcerend, and that was why i had that argument with my friend.
I just want to know what you guys think about jay and his links to the occult.

I just want to know what you guys think about jay and his links to the occult.
RHYMFEST SAYS LYRICAL RAPPERS DO MAKE MONEY TOO.
Rhymfest made a comment in a recent interview, saying that "lyrical rappers do make money". He said it in reSPONSE to what another rapper, "wacka flocka", said about lyrical rappers not making money. The chicago rapper, and KANYE WEST associate says he disagrees with the notion that lyrical rappers don't make money.
He went ahead to mention rappers like EMINEM, JADAKISS, JAY-Z, MOS DEF...that are considered very lyrical, and liked for their lyrical rap skills, and that they do have money. He said the rappers don't have to wear their money on their knecks to show that they have money.
I think i can't agree with him any less. See someone like NAS, one of the last real niggers alive, a very dope lyricist, and you can say he aint doing badly in the financial department. Atleast, the last time i checked, he had 5 houses in major cities in AMERICA, and the one in MALIBU is right next to actress, DEMI MORE'S apartment. He has a ROLLS ROYCE PHANTOM in his garage, and some other really expensive cars, so what are we talking about?
I chose nas as a case study, because he is one of the most down to earth and low key rappers i know; we would be going to far if i had to mention all the things that a rapper like jay-z has. So, i can back rhymfest that lyrical rappers do have money.
